Webinar- EU-ASEAN Relations Post-Pandemic: Views from the Frontline

Posted by jose - August 11, 2020

The EU and ASEAN have had a long standing relationship, spanning over 40 years.  During that time close ties have developed through trade (The EU is ASEAN’s second largest trading partner), investments (the EU is ASEAN’s largest investor), social and cultural ties.  The EU is amongst the largest donors to ASEAN and recently announced a EUR800m package of COVID-19 related support for the region.  The two blocs are both supporters of open, rules-based global trade, and the EU has provided significant support to the region through a number of programmes such as the ARISE+ project to assist economic integration, EREADI (which supports general regional dialogue), SHARE (supporting higher education) and others too.  But with the much anticipated Strategic Partnership seemingly stuck, a region-to-region trade deal mired in uncertainty, the first ever bloc-to-bloc air services agreement remaining unsigned, what are the prospects for a deeper and more comprehensive relationship going forward?

Join us for a discussion on the future of EU-ASEAN relations with two of the people at the forefront of it: Singapore’s Ambassador to the EU (Singapore is in the lead for ASEAN relations with the EU at the moment), and the EU’s Ambassador to ASEAN.
